National Meeting-Part IV

Without going through all the events I attended, I did want to add a few
comments about the meeting.
First, and not unexpectedly, BSA continues to look to the future, study,
plan, and execute programs designed to carry out its mission. From computer
networks and databases to endowment and investment help for local councils,
there are people dealing with sophisticated matters so that professionals
and volunteers can continue to reach young people and help them to make
their way in the world.

I had the pleasant surprise of being misdirected into the wrong meeting room
and therefore managed to attend what I believe is officially known as the
National
Venturing Standing Committee. For those of you who had heard of changes to
the Exploring program and had serious misgivings, I think as the details
come out
your worries will be allayed. I can tell you that the entire committee seems
to be very committed to a high quality program. It was obvious an enormous
amount of thought and effort has gone into Venturing. If you could have
heard the
comments and witnessed the attitudes of Bob Henry and Bill Evans on the
professional side and those of Chuck Bayless, Dr. Richard Miller, Jimmie
Homburg, and the other committee members on the volunteer side, I think you
would have come away, as I did, very excited about our new direction.

Finally, it was also very impressive to see Sylvester Tan, our Southern Region
representative, and Shana McElroy, the national president. They were both
friendly, poised, obviously intelligent, and quite at ease and natural.
Shana did a great job delivering the invocation at the national meeting, and
her comments to the committee, reflecting on her experience in Exploring,
made me feel again what a terrific program we're involved in.

So, we've got an exciting time ahead; let's get busy!
