Troop Historian Leadership Role?

All,
Last night at our troop meeting, my son completed
everything for first class. He then got himself
appointed troop historian. From one or two of his
comments after the meeting, I believe he thinks this
is a leadership responsibility he can skate through on
his way to Star. (Au contraire, my son!) Do most
troops have historians and, if so, what in the way
of leadership do you expect from them?
