That books is a little dated. The ideas espoused are OK for eastern and
north western trips, however southwester and desert trips that creates
problems.
Packing out the waste is still the best option. In the West you urinate
into the rivers rather than away from them. You also do not dig holes.
Find a large flat rock and when done spread the waste out into a thin layer
on the rock.
Because of the lack of rain in most of the west, waster whether solid or
liquid does not go anywhere. Liquid waste stays in the soil at the level
deposited and can be smelled years later. Some river canyons have been
closed because the waste does not wash away and the bacteria and virus
levels where to high. Spreading the solid waste out allows it to dry out
and blow away basically. Human waste that is put in a cat hole in an arid
region can be found in tack six years later.
Dependent upon your mode of transportation. Urinating away from a river
source in the west will get you a $1,000.00 fine.
