Explorer Posts should operate with elected youth leaders, usually a
president, a vice president for program, vice president for
administration, and vice president for communications, and/or secretary,
and a treasurer. Our post prefers a VP communications since they do
website and list-server duties.
The Exploring Program offers an excellent leadership training course
called the "Advanced Leadership Development Workshop." This program takes
about five hours or so to do, and requires that both Explorers and
Advisors participate in fairly equal numbers if possible. This is a great
opportunity to learn from each other about what youth expect from adults
and vice versa; it allows the Explorers to get to know the advisors better
and to learn to interact and treat each other as colleagues, rather than
a superior/subordinate relationship.
Your Council Exploring Training Team should have trainers and program
materials to conduct this course for you. If not, you can get the
training kit and video tapes and do your own if need be. It is scripted
well, and a little rehearsal will allow you to conduct one easily.
We usually add in a session of post program planning, especially for new
units to get them off and running with a six months program laid out.
There is also a specific Post Officer's seminar to be conducted by the
advisor(s) with the new officers to better learn their specific jobs and
expectations.
