Robert Caron wrote wondering whether the activities in the old Environmental
Science Merit Badge Book would be applicable to the new version of the merit
badge. The answer is with one exception - NO!. Runoff pans are still
utilized, although now there must be a drawing of the bare earth pan after
the application of water.
The new merit badge book, which is finally available, describes experiments
which will satisfy the requirements. They are reasonably simple and we
intend to use variants of these at Camp Frontier this year, modified only to
be better adjusted for a summer camp setting.
The requirements are considerably more demanding than those of the former
version of the merit badge. I have a feeling that I am going to be
returning even more scout notebooks for unacceptable work this year than I
did with the prior version of the merit badge. On the other hand, the
experiments will bring home some of the lessons which previously were merely
"discussed".
I have nearly completed the lesson plan for summer camp and would be happy
to share it with anyone who will privately e-mail me. It should be ready
about June 1st.
