compass history

I am looking for a little wisdom from the list. I will be assisting with a
school (6th grade) outdoor education program. Orienteering is one of the
subjects to be introduced/taught and the one I will be involved in. The
regular teacher would like me to include some history of the compass.
Although I know the technicals, i have never delved into the history.
Does anybody have a short history or can point me to a short history on the
development of the compass. I'm sure it goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy
back, but how far.
Thanks in advance
YIS
