We do an annual retreat where the members of the PLC get together
and do some evaluations, training, and planning. The boys put everything
together, not the adults.

They make a report card for the troop and assign grades based on how they
feel we performed, basically the 8 methods plus a few additional
categories. They also make a list of goals for the upcoming year. They
are usually very perceptive and constructive in their comments.

One of the biggest projects for the weekend is the creation of an annual
calendar. In preparation for this, each patrol meets on their own before
hand and creates THEIR version of the annual calendar, (that way every boy
in the troop has direct input into the plan at the patrol level).

At the PLC Retreat the boys go over all these plans with exhaustive debate
and finally create a comprehensive annual troop plan. These debates can
go on until 2 am sometimes. It can be a very very long weekend.

There are follow-up Quarterly Review Meetings (just an evening) every 3
months to evaluate how we are progressing toward our goals, and make
any needed changes or updates to the annual calendar. We try to have a
comprehensive plan for the year, but we still try to maintain some room
for flexibility.

Our PLC Retreat is a free overnight for the boys and usually takes place
at a forest preserve with a cabin. It is very popular and has been very
productive for us. We also do some leadership training during the
weekend if/when we can fit it in.
