Embarassed to be seen in uniform

Berk Moss (mossfam@TELEPORT.COM)

Some discussion on boys not wanting to be seen in uniform reminds me of
conversations I've had with boys about not wanting to tell friends they are
scouts.

This is strongest in early middle school ages. By high school the kids have
a little more self confidence and therefore a little more tolerance for
differences in peers.

Scouts I know know that some friends think it isn't cool to be a scout, but
most everyone thinks it is cool to make a 500 mile bike trip, or hike 50
miles in the wilderness, or spend the night in a snow cave, or climb Mount
Hood. These things are cool I encourage Scouts to tell friends about them.
It is interesting that the Scouts most involved in challenging outdoor
activities are proudest of being Scouts and more willing to wear the
uniform. Just reminds us that the key to a good troop is program, program,
program. Adults think it is more than a camping club (and I think so too)
but the attraction to boys are the opportunities that Scouting has for
outdoor adventure.
