Re: Camping in Colorado, Western Kansas

Jim,

You might want to check out staying at the Koshare Kiva in La Junta, either
en route or returning from BDSR. This is a great experience, since you
can stay at the Kiva for a very small fee, and eat at the Otero
college cafeteria; additionally, you can tour Bent's old fort, a restored
national park landmark on the Santa Fe Trail.

The Koshares do about three shows a week, and you could time it
to see one of their shows and tour their fabulous museum on
Indian art and artifacts (valued at over $40 million). It is one of
the best collections in North America.

La Junta is located on highway 50 about 60 miles east of Pueblo CO. You can
go north from
La Junta, on highway 71 at Rocky Ford to rejoin I70 (about 85 miles) and
continue
on to I-25 to get to BDSR (or return that way if you choose.) La Junta is
about
four hours driving time from Denver (200 miles), so that would be a good
stopping point
for a two day drive. BDSR is about two hours (100 miles) from Denver on I-25.
See the Koshare web page at

http://www.ruralnet.net/~koshare/

Joe Clay is the director and he is very helpful to visiting units.

Best wishes,

Bob Amick, Explorer Advisor, High Adventure Explorer Post 72, Boulder, CO
Longs Peak Council Exploring Training Chair; Camping Committee.
