Here's a strange one: How much money is enough in a pack's bank account?
Our pack has about $2,000 (after the Pinewood Derby and Blue & Gold) and
seems hesitant to spend it, even at this late part of the year.
During our Pinewood Derby, we sold hot dogs and soft drinks, with the
proceeds earmarked for "charity". About $325 was raised. At the first
committee meeting after the PWD (before I was involved with the
committee), someone mentioned that, as a non-profit organization, our
pack was, in fact, a charity. Since we wanted a new PW track (costing,
coincidentally, about $325), we could buy the track with the "charity"
funds.
So we gave the money to ourselves.
Pretty cheesy, I think.
If you take out the "charity" money and cost of the track from our bank
account, we would have about $1,350 left. Out of that, we will be buying
Cub and Webelos Scout books (for about 60 Scouts). That should still
leave us with more than $1,000.
Am I wrong in thinking our pack is financially too conservative? I want
to use some of the cash to buy software, contribute to FoS (another story
for another posting), buy uniform shirts for the leaders, and help some
of our Scouts pay for daycamp.
Ok, now for the actual question: What amount of money could be considered
reasonable for a "rainy day fund" (the minimum we should carry in our
account)?
