Ain't training GREAT!

John T. Peeples (peeples@MCI2000.COM)

After several long weeks of unsuccessful job hunting, difficult Troop =
meetings and bad weather; I finally got some relief!! I've just =
returned from a weekend on staff with the Southern Region's National =
Camp School for Day Camp Directors and it was GREAT! I think this was =
just what the doctor ordered to pick up my attitude and Scouting Spirit =
and give me a fresh outlook.

Having been trained as a Day Camp Director in 1995, this was my first =
opportunity to be on staff for this event. EVERYTHING about the weekend =
was a success - we have a fantastic staff (thanks to Phil Gilmer, course =
director!), great facility (Camp Pinecrest of the Presbytery of Memphis =
near LaGrange,TN) and a wonderful group of participants (some traveled =
all the way from New Orleans to Memphis TN for this training!). I was =
really impressed with the upbeat Scouting Spirit of everyone and the =
eagerness of the students to learn this material and get busy planning =
their Day Camps for this summer. We were visited by two National =
Scouters - Jerry Keathley and Ed "Mr. Magic" Woodlock and our own =
Chickasaw Council Executive Gene Stone. Participants for the training =
came from Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, and, Louisiana; =
many spent as much (if not more) time on the road as they did in the =
classroom! Few people outside the Day Camp volunteers (or other =
certified Camp staff) really know what great efforts these people go to =
in order to produce the quality Cub Scout Day Camps everyone enjoys; =
these folks really that extra mile (for some a few hundred extra :) :))

I don't know if any of the participants or staff are on the list, I have =
e-mail addresses for many, but didn't get time to discuss Scouts-L (but =
I will send them the link in a future mailing). For those that are on =
the list - THANKS for giving me a much needed boost when I really needed =
it. Also, for those waiting for e-mail of files I have on day camp =
(like the 1998 Standards, copies of forms we use etc.), please hang on - =
I'll be working on them as soon as I get some rest!

Again, THANKS guys! Everyone needs a weekend like this once in a while, =
hope I can return the favor one day - for those of you not at our NCS I =
hope you can find a similar Scouting experience when you need it!=20

YIS!
