Our COR has decided that he wants a Scout Troop back in our Church and
that
I should be the ScoutMaster. (I've got to start attending these staff
meetings)
So I am turning to this list for suggestions, I have been CubMaster for
several
years and the Pack is going good. I was Webelos leader before that, and
that's
the extent of my experience in Scouting.
Our former ScoutMaster took all of the Troops equipment when he went to
another
Charter Org so we are starting from scratch.
I have my second year Webelos who just crossed over plus several boys who
graduated last year and have not found a troop they like, so I will be
starting with
6 to 7 boys.
So give some ideas and directions, folks! What would you do if you were
in my
shoes? (Other than try to hide?)
Ron I am almost in the same sitation my wife and I reactivated a troop
that the leaders and the church had a disagreement so they left and took
all of the equipment with them. The troop has been inactive for 7 or 8
years we are still dealing with the same pastor and office staff. The
church staff has been very nice up to now we have not asked anything of
them except for a meeting place. I did push last week and asked for a
lockin and to have a garage sale on the parking lot have not got an
answer yet.
In October of 97 we started with 3 boys my oldest son a Star scout and 1
boy that was a Cub scout in 2nd grade and one that had never been in
scouts. We started having meetings and preparing for WEBELOS WOODS in
three weeks. We got alot of help from our De who had gone to a comminuty
kids fare and got some names (5 to be exact). So on the phone I went to
work and our second meeting we had 8 boys total with three more joining.
To make a long story short . It is now march and we have 15 actives and
five inactive boys on roster.
We now have three small patrols that have room for growth. This was
done because when we started we formed one patrol about the time the boys
got to know each and start to work to geather we made 2 patrols. That
was like starting over it took amonth for the boys to get settled again.
All of my patrol leaders are Scout rank. The SPL is Star, and the ASPL
is Second Class.
October we went to WEBELOS Woods with my Star as SPL. In November I had
a troop JLT. To help everyone understand what was expected of them.(
most of these boys have now scouting background at all.) This did help
some but I have also had to take each boy aside and give some individual
coaching. The patrol are run as smooth as possible the PL are planning
some good patrol conner discussion. We have a Patrol Leader Council
meeting each month for the boys to plan the events.
March is not going exactly as planned. We could not get the council camp
because of a trainning conflict. This took out the rifle range. One of
our leaders got hurt and there went the repelling as he was the only one
that has any experence, but hay there is always July as April, May are
already planned and set and June is summer camp.
O the March camp will be on a WWII trainning base were we will work on
scout skills( fire building, knife saftey, knots and there is a range
we can use and I happen to have certified BSA range operator in the troop
(for BB guns but the boys seem excited an that whats counts.)
I gusses my sucess has been a very active program with a camp out every
month. We have done 5 community service projects since November. Campout
have alittle over booked and the boys worked hard to come up to speed on
their scout skills.
The boys are currently working on 5 merit badges that they have picked.
The old Cub Scout saying KISKIF (keep it simple keep it fun) mainly Fun
is the trick and recurit some good asstiant scoutmasters ( I have three
one for each patrol this makes them feel needed also.) During patrol
conners I have scoutmaster conferences and visit with the parents.
Sounds simple but it takes some hard work on start up. If I can help you
can E-MAIL me privately.
