Response to Carol Kelly on F.O.S.
As a volunteer District F.O.S. Chairman, I can offer the following on
collecting money from the families. Friends of Scouting is a necessary evil
of the Scouting Program. These funds are needed to support the council that
ultimately provides the program for our boys. Now, done correctly, a
presentation with slides and perhaps a recorded tape should be shown to your
Pack. The presenter should be someone from outside your unit. You as the unit
leader should NOT be making the plea for funds!!! Your D.E. should know this.
The only thing you as the Cubmaster have to do is provide time at your Blue and
Gold Banquet for the presentation of 10 minutes tops, no longer!

I am from the General Nash District of the Cradle of Liberty Council,
(Philadelphia) and I run our campaign this way... Every unit leader is
contacted as to when (IMPORTANT --NOT IF BUT WHEN!) they will have their Court
of Honor or Pack meeting in Jan, Feb or March of 1998. Every unit
participates, it is not optional! Then I send in one of my presenters to make
the presentation. The results are very, very good. The decision to donate
dollars to the council must be made by the families. You as the unit leader
have no right to make this decision for the families by saying no to a
presentation. Have a presentation. Let your DE send in a presenter to make
the sales pitch. This way, everyone wins... your DE, the council, and your
Pack may earn a nice plaque for your efforts.

I used to be an Eagle, but I will always be an Eagle Scout, and a Silver Beaver
too!
