The stitching on the embroidery is applied with a piece of backing
fabric inside the shirt, so the threads can be cut from the backside and
pulled out with minimal damage to the shirt. I have seen this done and it
has almost no perceptible effect on the fabric. So the shirt can be
recycled.

According to the insignia guide, page 43, "Nameplates: ..worn by all
members *either* above BSA, above interpreter strip or centered on the
right breast pocket flap."

Thus, the positioning of the name tag, according to the insignia guide is
optional, either above the pocket or on the pocket. A permanent
position above the pocket allows for placement of the OA flap if it is
worn in the future. Embroidery takes less space than a name tag so it is
easier to also have other items such as the interpreter's strip attached
in the same area. And, most of all, it doesn't break, come off, or get
lost.
