My name is Jim Patton and I have been a subscriber for a few months during
which time I have had the good fortune and enjoyment of reading a large number
of high quality posts on the list. In keeping with protocol I thought I
should introduce myself.
I grew up in Twin Falls, Idaho where I was a Scout in Troop 67 sponsored by
First Methodist Church. I am a member of the Eagle class of 1964 and
graduated from JASM to ASM in my troop when I went to university. During the
summers, home from college, I taught swimming and lifesaving merit badge
classes (among others) for the troop and as well as traveling with the troop
on high adventure trips. After finishing my undergraduate studies I moved to
Texas to complete my education and I did not rejoin Scouting until the mid
1980's when my son, Dustin (Eagle class of 1994), became a Tiger Cub. Since
then I have held various adult leader positions the first being, you guessed
it, Tiger Cub coordinator for Pack 453 in Woodway (a suburb of Waco), Texas.
I served a brief stint as pack committee chair and then two years as Webelos
den leader. When Dustin crossed over I became an assistant scoutmaster in
Troop 308, First United Methodist, Waco, and have served there since as well
as being a committee member for Post 308.
I have also been fortunate to experience Wood Badge training (Egotistical
Eagle, SC-423) and to serve in some district and council roles. Currently I
am on the council executive board, am council training chair, and am on
another Wood Badge staff. Over these recent years Scouting has given me an
opportunity for great fun and significant community involvement. This last
summer Dustin and I had the opportunity to make a trek at Philmont and then
serve on staff together at the Jamboree, our last major adventures with Dustin
being a Boy Scout. We had a great time but most importantly the experience
again reminded me of the fact that no matter where one goes in this country,
what great people one meets through Scouting.
