BP picked up the left-handed hand shake from an African (Ashanti ?)
chief.
The European right-handed hand shake came from the knightly custom of
showing an empty right hand to prove one's good will by indicating that
he was unarmed. The African custom was to offer one's left hand to
indicate that one trusted the other party to the extent that he carried
no shield to protect himself from attack.
