Re: Cub Scout Leader Training

Leslie,
We here in Two Bays District will go the extra mile to help out any leader who
WANTS to be trained. But we all have our limits. Three things come to mind
about your situation.

First, in our district, 99 percent of the units recharter on January 31st.
That implies that, to qualify for Quality Unit, the leadership of the unit must
complete training by the end of the charter year. At this point you only have
two weeks.

Second, it sounds like your training team has already gone the extra mile. We
offer CS basic twice a year. Once in the Spring and once in the Fall. You have
offered it six times! I'd say your team has done their job well.

Third, providing the unit(s) you're speaking about were aware of the previous
six training sessions and just chose not to come, I'd say they're on their own
until your next scheduled session. If your DE/SE insists on them being trained
now, let them train them! You can always teach them properly later ;-)

On the flip side, if we're talking about a new leadership team for the unit, or
a newly formed unit that could not have attended your earlier sessions, I would
do everything I could to set up a training session for them. New leaders need
to know that the district training staff will go out of their way to help out,
and sometimes a foundering unit can be bolstered by receiving a simple award
like the QU.

YIS,
Ron Raab-Long
