I would say that use and sometimes abuse of scouting very bipartisan. Many
candidates like to have scouts carrying that flag for the cameras at thier
rallies. Many years ago when I was involved in political campaigns in
another state, I was asked to provide scouts for that purpose but declined.
However, I have never seen any attempt to control scouting by any party.
I am a little too young to remember the get out the vote campaign. I joined
scouting three weeks before the 1964 election. The good turns that I
remember are collecting for goodwill and handing out flyers for the census.
However, I do see a get out the vote event as a valuable service to the
country an one we might consider again. Our rate of voter participation in
this country is almost criminal. Any party are candidate that feels that it
is to its advantage to have fewer rather than more voters needs to have its
values examined and certianly will not get my vote.
