I have had occasion to write quite a few letters of recommendation for
Eagle candidates. Usually what is needed is a character reference from
your knowledge of the individual, and if known, some of his
accomplishments. Often, there is a "void" in the Eagle process for
listing the accomplishments of the candidate except possibly for the
biographical sketch which is usually printed on the cover of his Eagle
Scout Court of Honor program. It would be good if the BOR could see much
of this information from a letter of recommendation.
I suggest interviewing the candidate to learn of his accomplishments in
school such as clubs, grade point average, major emphasis, sports, letters
earned, and possible future career goals or aspirations; additionally, a
sketch of his Scouting experiences, awards and
accomplishments are useful, as well as information about his religious
involvement, community service activities, hobbies and interests.
Since I also coordinate Eagle Courts of Honor, this effort allows me to
write the letter of recommendation and then to write the biographical
sketch for the program.
If anyone is interested in a copy of some letters I have written, I would
be happy to share them; please e-mail me privately with requests.
Best wishes,
