Joe:
I think you have things a little mixed up. If what you say were true,
Girl Scoouts would be Girl guides or some other name and WOSM would not
include GSUSA( I am not a member but a scouter who believes in caution),
which it definitely does and Major GSUSA events are also listed on their
Calender. I suppect the real issue for starting these offshoots is that
its easier to litigate than to organize.
Since you finally blew me onto my soapbox, Here it comes:
1. I'm getting tired of the More California tag put on this discussion.
Just because we in California live on the Bleeding Edge of
Scouting(whether Irving recognizes it or not), we have to face enough
without what sometimes appears as lack of support for facing the future.
2. With due respect to Auntie Beans and others who want to move this
dicussion to rec.Scouting, Some of us (including me) receive their
service in such a manner that we do not have access to news groups. Fine
for some, bad for others.( and my service is free).
3. Who Brought Girls into this discussion anyway? The outside issue
being raised by the Justices was Exclusion of African-Americans if the
policy was taken to its logical extreme.
4. The issue of Closed units ( must belong to the Chartering
Organization) seems to be an East and Southern Phenonmenon. My Son's
troop is Chartered by an Episcopal Church. 3 of 44 boys in the troop are
from member families. 4 are Jewish and 1 is Muslim. the Charter
Organization Rep has no problem with that and he's the parish priest (
and an Eagle Scout)
Well, the ole soapbox is getting a little hot, as Porky Pig would say
"TheaThea thea Thats all, folks".
