The closest I came to the letter home was when I took a group of
UK Scouts on a three week trip to the USA. One of the parents
showed me the card her son wrote wrote which went something like :
" Having fun. Today we visited New York City and saw a shooting.
Weather very hot. Love Tommy Tenderfoot. "
Whilst sightseeing we came upon an incident where someone had apparently
tried to mug a cab driver. I am not sure whether the cab driver had
shot the mugger or if it was a police officer. We kept the kids well
away on the other side of the road.
Now I regularly brief Scouts to stop and think of the impact their
messages home will have on their parents, and if in doubt keep the
" blood and guts " until they are safely back home with their ever-loving
and long-suffering families.
