? Explorers/Girls ?

I have loosely followed the posting concerning girls and CA until the one
from Mary Anderson caught may eye and got my attention. Hers got those
little gears in my brain a-turning.

My daughter will turn 14 on March 7 of this year. She is currently not
involved in any extra-curricular activities and has not been for several
years. This is largely due to the fact that she suffers from a learning
disability. She has been in special classes at school since first grade.
This isolates her most of the day from "regular" students. Girls her age
have little to do wtih her and she has few friends. It is really
heart-breaking. Finally after many years she has a good friend, another
girl with learning disabilities but her parents are considering moving after
being here a couple of years.

My daughter needs something in her life besides school and home life. She
really enjoys attending cub scout functions with my husband, son and me.
And boys seem to be nicer to her and I don't think some even realize she has
a problem; unlike the girls. A few months ago she attended a
family/scouting camping event at a native american pow-wow. We took her
friend. Boy scouts nearer their ages were there and they all seemed to get
along well.

Our BSA unit does not have an Explorer unit so I really don't know much
about Explorers. We have done the church thing and now that she is a
teenager she is uncomfortable there as it is mostly teenage girls with only
a boy or two.

I would certainly like to know more about Explorers as this may be a
positive activity for my teenage daughter. She really enjoys being outdoors
and hands-on activities. Any thoughts please email me at
<howlers@coastalnet.com> or post here or both. Thanks!
