Re: Counting Camping Days

Somebody set me straight on this.

I stopped by the council office and asked for the application for the National Camping
Award. The clerk gave me publication No. 33690A, dated 1997 and entitled "Our Camping
Log". It contained a cut off part which was the Troop Application for the award.
Reading the requirements on the Camping Log I see "...must be in attendance for each
twenty-four hour period to count as a camper day..." Somebody said earlier that the
National Camping Award guidelines counted by each night camped. As typical two night
camping trip (Friday 6pm to Sunday 12 noon) typically falls short by at least 5-6 hours
of the 48 hours required by the Our Camping Log requirements, anyone have another
publication from BSA on this that clearly said "count each night as camper day"? For
that matter, what about the Camping Merit Badge, any written guidelines on counting
camper days there?

Yes, it only 5-6 hours, but I can be a nit-picker on something that is straight forward
as "twenty-four hours" Did I mention that I'm an engineer? :^) I can't see getting an
award by shaving corners. Maybe I can count travel time <grin>. Oops, we alway plan to
arrive back by noon!

The last statement in the requirements said "Individual...may quality for the cumulative
patch by participating in campouts with their families, patrols, or other groups."
There is a troop cumulative award for 100 to 1000 days and nights. Does every scout in
the troop, including the boys who just joined, get a troop cumulative award. What about
the individual cumulative award. What should one do so the boys get credit for camping
with their families, church groups, or whatever? Is there some other paperwork to file
for the individual cumulative award? What?

Thanks
