Mom and Dad as Jack Daniels

The Tommie Tenderfoot/Marlborough Man thread reminded me of the
Cub campout where Mom continuously wore T-shirts advertising, in
word and pictures, her (apparently) favorite beverage. Personally,
I prefer Jameson's 1780 or Bushmill's Single Malt, but I don't
wear advertisements for them at Scouting outings. I suffered
in silence until the outing was over, and still wonder what
to say.

The local schools have banned clothing or other articles advertising
any product that the wearer cannot legally possess or use. I think
that such a policy, extended to the adults (can't advertise anything
the Scouts can't possess or use) might cause some controversy, but
would preserve the message of Scouting, at least as it is presented
here in the U.S.A. Scouters in other countries, with different
policies on the use of tobacco and alcohol at Scouting functions
by those of legal age, might have a different perspective.

As far as what to do in a situation where the parents have come up
with a way to outfit their son with good gear inexpensively, I would
go along with asking if the logos could be obscured in some fashion.
Although the parents make a living selling legal products to those
who can legally use them, I would think that they would agree that
advertising those products to Scouts who * cannot * legally use them
is improper. However, I would definitely sacrifice even this if
it was felt that it would not be possible to make the Scout
understand that disapproval of the product did not mean disapproval
of him.
