All Merit Badge Counselors within the Troop

Thomas Heavey, Sr. (heavey@NWRAIN.COM)

The negative comment in an earlier post about having a boy go through to
eagle without getting counselors from outside the troop, also struck me
funny, but I decided to let it pass unless someone else brought it up.
Unlike Kathy's example, my troop is not isolated from other troops,
district or council. There are four other 50+ membership troops with 20
minutes of us. We are located 10 minutes from the council office. We have
40 - 60 boys, it fluctuates from year to year. We average active adult
p[articpation of about 50 per cent of boy participation. Our adults bring a
diversity of skills, vocations, avocations, interests and hobbies. There is
hardly a merit badge which couldn't be covered by one of them. Ususally the
only time a boy gets a merit badge from out of the troop is at summer camp.
And for several years we ran our own summer camp too.
I do not see a need to urge the boys to go outside of the troop when a
large troop can present the diversity which we do, and many other troops do
also. From time to time a boy from a smaller troop will turn to one of our
counselors for instruction and he is welcomed.
