Young ASM's

In Troop 204 it was the tradition that at the Troop meeting following his
18th birthday, the young man would fill out and sign an Adult Leader
Application form and as soon as possible attend Scoutmaster Fundamentals.
Even if Eagle Scouts and Polaris or SOGUS trained.
(You should have seen those training patrols at Fundamentals snap up our
Eagles as patrol leaders. Everyone had fun and learned.)
Unless finishing high school or at a local college, many of these ASM's
couldn't attend troop meetings. Some came on some campouts, but quite a few
found a way to get to summer camp as adult leaders. Their real value was
when they joined the troop in backpacking high adventures. The older
Scouters may have had the experience and wisdom, but the younger Scouters
had the muscle and stamina. At the end of a day on the trail they could
still function. They were a real asset.
At one point, we had 70+ Scouts and 24 ASM's about half of which were under
25 years old.
