Well here I am.
My name is Dave Zinder and I have made scouting a part of my life for over
52 years. I haven't been active or even registered all that time, but it's
in my blood just the same.
I began briefly as a cub in Kenosha, Wisconsin at age 9, then moved to
Tucson, Arizona and joined again at 10. From that time on through my boyhood
I was hooked on Scouting. I received my Eagle in 1953 and was first chief
of Papago Lodge of OA, Catalina Council, appointed by the installing team.
The team leader knew me through ham radio, my other long term vice. For two
years I was the radio operator at Camp Lawton, sending radiograms to Tucson
below and putting on a radio program of scouts talking to their parents
every weekday afternoon. I cajoled one of the other jr. staff members who
had a better voice than mine to be the on scene announcer. In College at
the University of Arizona I was president of Alph Phi Omega in 1957. I also
served as assistant scoutmaster of Troop 26 at Temple Emmanuel in Tucson at
that time.
I dropped out after college until my oldest son was cub age. From that time
I went on to be committeeman several times, cubmaster, scoutmaster at the
Jewsh Community Center for eight years, and, now after several years break
am the COR for Troop 30 sponsored by the men's club/sisterhood combination
(B'Yachad) at Temple Chai in Phoenix.
I am one of the long time members of our Interfaith Religious Recognition
Committee, since 1973. We are very active with a Scout Sunday reecognition
program for all boys earning their religious awards during the year, our new
Ten Commandment hikes, Scout-O-Rama display of religious awards, and when we
can, we participate in finding a camp chaplain. In another posting, I'll
list the trials and tribulations of our relationship with our council.
Presently, I have one more item to complete before I receive my woodbadge
beads. I went to the week long program at Camp Raymond, near Flagstaff, AZ
in June of 1996. It's never too late, but I'd recommend that all scout
leaders participate in it while still active with the boys.
And last, I am one of a few members of our very loose knit Jewish Committee
on Scouting here in Grand Canyoun Council.
Rather a long introduction, but I had a lot to tell.
