Yes, we will be there this year! I'm not sure though whether I'll be along. I
go for a second interview for a new job on Monday so I may not be a able to
take any time off in January.
As far as advice goes, be prepared to have a very quiet, relaxing day on
Saturday. You basically turn the boys over to the Midshipmen after the opening
ceremony and have most of the day to yourself. You can tag along with them if
you like, but there's always something to do. Be sure to spend some time in
the Naval museum. They have the best collection of ship models I've ever seen!
In the evening, dinner is served in King Hall. The hall seats 5000, everyone
eats at the same time. There's a rule at the Academy that what one person
eats, everyone eats. A few years ago, the Superintendant had VIP guests for
dinner and wanted to serve Prime Rib. Guess what, all 1,200 Boy Scouts were
served Prime Rib as well. We've been warned not to ever expect that again. Of
course, the boys keep hoping...
We camp at a YMCA facility about 15 minutes from the Academy. Its a real nice
camp right on the water, with hot showers. The Middies that run the program do
their best to keep it 'boy run'. Your SPL will sometimes be the only one to
attend meetings and crackerbarrels, so make sure he's ready to put in a busy
weekend.
The weather can run the entire gambit, from sunny 70's, to below zero wind
chills, or anything in between. In 1996 it was postponed due to a couple of
feet of snow, the year before we walked around in shirt sleeves.
If you've never been to Annapolis you should spend some time touring the city
dock area. Its adjacent to the Academy and within walking distance.
The prerequisites listing for each merit badge are definately required. If
your Scouts haven't done the needed work beforehand, they will not get the
Merit Badge. In addition, each MB session will require a test at the end to
verify they learned the material. Aviation is real popular due to the neat
equipment they have to run it with. One of the professors in the department is
an old time Scouter.
Your boys, and you, will have a great time. Hope to see you there.
