It is with great heaviness in my heart that I report the passing of one
of the finest scouters that anyone will ever know. Dave Durham, better
known to those who adored him as Uncle Dave, passed away today as a
result of a stroke. This noble and humble man touched literally
thousands of both youth and adults during his years as a professional in
north Georgia and here in Indian Waters Council in Columbia, South
Carolina. After he retired as a professional, he remained active in
scouting many years until his death running the trading post at Camp
Barstow every summer and during all lodge events dispensing ice cream,
Cokes, great wisdom, generosity and sharp humor. He was awarded the
Vigil Honor in 1964 - Shot in the Leg - and was an active member of
Muscogee Lodge.
The family will be receiving visitors tomorrow night (Sunday, November
30) from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Thompson's Funeral Home at 200 State
Street in West Columbia (phone 803-791-0650).
The funeral is planned for Emmanuael Lutheran Church at 2491 Emmanuel
Church Road, West Columbia. Refer to the newspaper (The State ) for
more details as they are yet to be finalized, but the family hopes to
have the service at 2:00 p.m. on either Monday or Tuesday. The family
has asked that all of Dave's Scouting family honor his great
contributions to our program by wearing a full class-A uniform. The
burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park at 7100 Sumter Highway
(Garner's Ferry Road ).
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Davis
M.
Durham Trading Post at Camp Barstow (Indian Waters Council, P.O. Box
144, Columbia, SC 29202) or the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Please keep Dave's wife, Gladys, his daughters, Madeline and Elizabeth,
and the rest of his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Heaven just became much richer and our loss one of devastating grief.
God bless Uncle Dave.
