Ooooh, another uniform question.
Now, I remember Official Boy Scout Shoes. They existed. I think they
were made by the same company that made Buster Brown Shoes.
So here's the challenge... go to any current handbook, look up and then
post, a reference
(edition and page number) to what type of shoes should be worm with the
uniform or to a Board of Review. I'll even accept a reference to an
official BSA publication (number and page please) stating which shoes
should not be worn with the uniform.
As an additional incentive, here's a trivia question: What company
manufactured the Official Boy Scout shoe soles? I've already given a
hint. The first to post the correct answer will receive a shiny new
Colonial Virginia Council CSP from me via UPS.

Rich,
The only reference to shoes in the tenth printing of the fifth edition of the
handbook copyrighted 1990 comes on page 566. "The scout uniform consists of
a cap ..... (yada,yada,yada)...shoes or hiking boots." Pictures of scouts on
the page show both sneakers and hiking boots. On page 567 it states to wear
the uniform "when you appear before a board of review or a court of honor".
In the eighth edition, first printing, copyrighted 1972, there is no specific
reference to shoes at all on page 13, but there are drawings of uniform parts
(including those nifty red berets). The book states that each troop will
decide which official combination its members will wear.
In the seventh edition, first printing, copyrighted 1965, page 58 "Boy Scout
shoes-brown or black-are made of soft leather and have sturdy soles." On page
59 the book states that "you wear the uniform ... when you appear for
advancement before a board of review or court of honor."
In the sixth edition, fourth printing, copyrighted 1962, page 51 "Boy Scout
shoes-brown or black-are made of soft leather and have sturdy soles." On
page 54 the book states that "you wear the uniform ... when you appear for
advancement before a board of review or court of honor."
In the fifth edition, fifth printing, copyrighted 1952 there is no reference
to shoes. On page 52 it states to wear the uniform "when appearing before
courts of honor" or "on other occasions when requested."
In the first edition, copyrighted 1911 reprinted in 1975, page 365 states
"any good shoe that is made up for the purpose of ease and comfort in
tramping will serve the boy scout's needs."
As to your trivia question, official scout shoes were manufactured by the
Brown Shoe Company in St. Louis(page 539) and the General Shoe Corp of
Nashville.(page 546 June 1952 handbook)
The official boy scout sole was made by the Gro-Cord Rubber Co in Lima
Ohio(page 563 in the 1952 handbook)
