One thing to keep in mind is the SM should not be indispensible to the
proper execution of a troop meeting. Granted, sometimes we DO need to be
there, but usually we should be able to turn the meeting over to an
assistant SM and the SPL. Now, it may not run as _well_ as if we were
there (a concession to my ego :^) but it should run ok. Not only does it
give _us_ a break, but it is valuable training to the ASM and SPL. This
training may be invaluable some day when we _can't_ be there for some
reason.
As I have experienced these last few months, and now weeks, of my
Scoutmastership, it has become apparent that my tenure would have been
much easier, more fun and effective had I been better at delegation and
using my assistants effectively. I have discovered that not only are they
almost as good as I am (another concession to my ego...), they are better
at a number of things than I am. Someone should teach a course on this.
FWIW,
Steve
