Well, Jim, let me start off by recommending that you do several things
in addition to the "Trail to First Class" program. My staff and I cover
the following topics as we go along, weaving it into the new Scouts
advancement program.
In no particular order of precedence, here are my suggestions:
+ What the Troop organization chart looks like
+ PLC (aka Green Bar) Meetings (what and why they are important)
+ What the SPL, PL, & APL are supposed to do, concentrating on the
PL (In my opinion, the PL has the most important job in the Troop)
+ Menu preparation, concentrating on turning it into a shopping list
+ What the Patrol Method is and why we use it
+ Preparing to go camping (winter gear especially)
+ Leadership vs Followership (Scouts listening to boy leaders)
+ Three-pan KP method (warm scrub, hot & soapy wash, hot rinse)
+ Preparing a fair duty roster
+ Proper uniform wear (insignia, Scout socks, etc.)
+ Packing your own pack (what to bring, where to put it...)
+ Baden-Powell Patrol award (what, why, etc.)
+ The Grubmaster Blues, or why it's important to bring your share of
the Patrol's food money the week *before* you go camping
+ Permission slips (what and why)
I'm sure that's not all, but I like it. Perhaps other List denizens
will chime in and fill in the void. :-)
A Fellow Scouter,
Drew
