Re: new problem

Thanks for the all replies (public & private) on the Awards. I do have to
correct myself based on one of the replies regarding the Archery Belt
Loop. It is not required to be done at a camp. I do know where I got
this in my head though...S&A Leaders Guide Page 14, 1st paragraph :
Shooting SPorts for Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts, and Parents in Camp, No.
13-550, has been developed for those who will give guidance to Cub Scouts
and Webelos Scouts in learning BB gun and archery shooting-sports skills
while in camp.

It goes on to speak of only BB needed the approval from a camp director.
(It has been over 2 years since I'd gotten this guide :). So, I did have
that part wrong. (oops)

As to conducting the "team" sports in the pack, it would never happen. I
only have 6 boys in my den, not enough for any team sport and in speaking
with the other Den Leaders there is absolutely no interest. They feel
this is definitely a "side-line" to Cub Scouting and not necessary. It
will take away from their Wolf/Bear Time. I tend to have to agree, but
once they get up to Webelos I guess they'll understand, though they've
already been told :) We're also a small Pack. 30 boys. Getting well
over half out to play a softball game or other sport, well, I just know
the kids. I don't see it.

My point was, by admitting that my own son will presumably not receive the
Sportsman as I don't plan on him joining any more teams, is that I feel
there seems to be an awful lot of importance placed on getting "All 20"
pins. That's all I hear from the other leaders.

If Johnny is great at Art, and James is great in Science, then why can't
they earn those and not be concern with something that just isn't of
interest to them? I don't want to pressure a boy who isn't interested in
sports into joining a baseball team "just" to get a pin. I don't think
that's the point.

I want this year and a half or so of Webelos to be enjoyable. And in
typing this post I'm realizing that I was putting undue pressure on myself
to help them get "them all". They need 8. They may not be the same 8,
but they'll earn their 8. If we get more, great. If not, I'm sure
they'll do fine.

Is it a goal in BSA to go for ALL those Merit Badges I see on the Merit
Badge poster? Is there really a boy out there attempting it all?
<whew>!

Thanks again....
Alicia
