Carl,
Thank you for your response. However, I respectfully disagree with you. While
working on your Wolf and Bear badges there are several achievements which
specifically require family participation, however, there are other
achievements for these awards which does not. My sons are 11, second year
Webelos, and 8, Bear, and my husband and other children enjoy working together
with my sons to encourage them. I know I am lucky that all four of my
children support each other in school, sports, Scouting, and most aspects of
their lives. I try to encourage the same family spirit with the Scouts in my
Bear den with their own families. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
What an ideal world it would be if all families worked together. But reality
says they don't always. If a Scout is in Little Leaque, he may want to earn
that letter with his coach. My husband, a coach, was asked by one of his team
members if he would work with him to earn the letter. My husband felt honored
this boy would ask him. This boy would stay a little late after practice
ended to work with my husband. It improved his skills and my husband felt the
boy seemed to respect the game more. Had this boy earned a letter in another
sport and not been given the chance to work towards another letter (to
receive), I don't know if he would have gone this extra step in baseball. It
was a very positive experience for both the Scout and his family, and my
husband and my family. :-) I think with each letter received, the Scout will
be able to recall what special time was spent with an adult, parent or not, in
working towards that letter.
