Belt loop overload

Greg-
I've run into this a time or two in the past as Cubmaster. In
general, the belt loop is awarded to recognize (and encourage) boys to
try each sport ONCE. The idea is that if they try enough, they will find
one or more they can stick to for a lifelong fitness assist. The only
requirements are that the boy learn the rules, practice a bit, and play
the sport one time. I learned all this at a PowWow from a member of the
committee that wrote the program.
In addition to this, if a boy earns it as a Cub, or even as a Tiger
(where Packs allow this), he is elligible to earn it again as a
Webelos--providing he shows the improvement of age. There is mention in
one of my books that if "you earned it as a Wolf or Bear, you should now
try to do even better as a Webelos". The old "Do Your Best" comes
through again, similar to the Arrow Point elective program.
For your pack, I would try to set some guidelines--perhaps one loop
per sport or academic activity for Cubs, one for Webelos. Otherwise, you
could have leaders requesting loops every time the guy went swimming,
bowling, or whatever. The one exception would be the BB Gun one, which
can only be earned at a Council Camp (at least where I'm at). That one
is special enough to award every year.
