A Little More Information on My "Special" Troop

Erik Mayer (BSA113@AOL.COM)
Sat, 11 Oct 1997 22:54:23 -0400

Mike Walton asked me if anyone comes along with me and who charters my Tr=
oop.
The agency that I work for charters the Troop and if I have 6 or more boy=
s on
an outing, my agency will send an additional staff. Our agency policy is =
to
send one staff alone with the kids if there are six or fewer attending th=
e
outing. If I take any kids from the agency hiking, I make sure that I hav=
e
another staff with me in case someone gets hurt or one of the kids has a
"crises". I primarily lack assistance at the weekly Troop meetings trying=
to
teach skills to 7 of these special needs boys at the same time. None of t=
he
other staff have any Scouting experience and can not assist in teaching t=
he
skills. Friday I recruited a member of our programming staff who has
backpacking, but no Scouting experience to assist me. Hopefully he will b=
e
able to help. I gave him his own copy of the Scout Handbook to read.

Staying anywhere overnight at this time has not been allowed, so cabin
camping is also out. I was told that this is due to Licensing Department
regulations and insurance reasons. My agency also does not want to spend =
the
$50.00 it would cost to get the Troop it's own Scout insurance policy.
