Youth members that have earned the William T. Hornaday Award, the Merit
Medal, the Heroism Medal, the Honor Medal, and/or the youth religious emblem
(what most of them were wearing) of their faith may wear the square knot
representing those awards on their field uniform.

> Metal AOL pins

In some local Councils, and as a "test deal" for National, the metal
full-sized AOL (Arrow of Light, not to be confused with the online service
America Online for those that didn't "get it") pins are *permitted*; So far,
from the feedback that's been backchanneled to me, the test is working fine.

> BTW, what is that olive/grey small rectangular patch on most boys' left
>pocket flaps?

It is a local Council pre-version of the Tiger Cub Graduation emblem which
was recently made available to Scouts and Cub Scouts. While the Order of
the Arrow flap is what most Scouts and Scouters associate with that location
(on the flap), there's NOTHING in the Uniform Guide now or before, that says
that the ONLY insignia that goes there are Order of the Arrow insignia.

The Sunny Land, Swannee River Area, Coastal Carolina, and about 20 or so
other Councils have used that "loophole" to allow locally or privately
produced "camping emblems" or (most common) Tote'm Chip emblems to be worn
on the right pocket flap until such time as the Scout becomes a member of
the national camping and service honorary.

Again, local Councils have the authority and permission to create localized
patches and other insignia to support national program or national program
emphasis.

> Non-uniform socks

At least they're *wearing socks*!! *grinning*

> MBs not sewn on sash in orderly fashion (ISTR, rows of three are
>"regulation")

Merit badges can be worn on narrower sashes in rows of two. And there's
nothing except a diagram that *says* that Scouts HAVE to neatly wear them in
rows of three.

> Sleeve patches aren't touching each other
> Are COLLAR pins allowed? Boy in front left corner has a star pin

These two are good ones.....the fullsize pins (except for the First Class pin)
are to be worn on civilian clothing only. Looked like to me that the Scout
didn't know what to do with it, and either Mom, Dad, or Scout himself
decided that it looked "kewl" there.

As far as the shoulder sleeve patches touching each other....well...the
diagrams in the _Scout_Handbook_ need to return so that parents and Scouts
can actually put their handbook next to their shirts and compare where
everything should go.

If you or your unit would benefit from light cardboarded "uniform templates"
showing the "proper placement" of BSA insignia on the Boy Scout or Scouter
field uniform, please send me a posting at blkeagles@aol.com....we have
agreed here that we wouldn't be doing any overt advertising here on this
forum and I support it. 'Nuff said.
