Merit Badge Blue Cards

Does anyone have any experience using the blue
merit badge cards in a troop of 80 scouts?

Our advancement person does not want to use them,
and hasn't used them for years. He says that it
would be too confusing and time consuming to keep
track of. Since July 1997, the troop has awarded
approximately 250 merit badges. In our 87 year
history, we have had 180 Eagles...so the system
we use must work.

Currently, the only records of advancement the boys
have are in a home computer that the advancement
person has.

Questions:

1) Is it mandatory (National standard only) that a
unit use the blue merit badge cards?

2) Does anyone know of any good MAC (no PC/WIndows please)
software for tracking advancement?

Thanks for the help.

Update on my almost Eagle/leaving for Marines son:
his BOR is scheduled (tentatively) for Oct 6. (The reason
I am questioning blue cards, was that there were typos
made on his Eagle application...if we had the cards to
begin with, maybe these errors wouldn't have happened?)
Steve is leaving for Parris Island on 13 Oct., hopefully
as an Eagle Scout!

Congrats to all the new Eagles that I have read on Scouts-L.

You can email me privately with answers to the blue card ?'s!
