After reading this string for a couple of days, I counted people in the mall.
Fully 67% of the men had a pierced ear (or chose to wear an earring). Not
an accepted part of our culture? 56% had beards, as well. 1% had a pierced
lip, 1% a pierced eyebrow, 2% a pierced nose. While I didn't keep track, I
also noticed a huge preference for shaved heads over long hair.
For the record, I counted 3% of women with pierced eyebrows, 1% with pierced
lips, 2% with pierced eyebrow(s), 22% with pierced bellybottons exposed, 0%
with beards (thankfully).
While I did not approach these people personally for an age check, I would
guesstimate the average age at about 25. I did limit the "survey" to teens
and adults, but would no doubt be surprised at the ages of some of those I
saw. Also incidentally, all the men I work with are in their thirties, and
all have multiply pierced ears. (But that's all we have pierced!!) All also
have Scouting experience!
