Proper Uniforming @ Camporees (add. correction)

Hi:
I am with Pack 164 in northeastern N. C. Last weekend I attended my first
Camporee as a Webelos Leader with my den and various other leaders and
parents. We had a real good and tiring time since many of us worked at
teaching stations for Project WILD.
During the planning stages we were informed it would be "ok" if my den wore
their Pack T's we had made as our summer uniform two years ago. It clearly
states in our Pack By-laws it is our "summer uniform". I informed the
parents that each boy should wear their summer uniform on Saturday for the
activities but that night they would need to change into their Class A for
the campfire and also Class A for Sunday's church service.
Then the camporee planning staff change their minds and reported at
roundtable that Class A would need to be worn all day Saturday and Sunday
for church. We realized that points would be deducted from our score but we
still chose to wear our Pack's summer uniform anyway.
Many of the Project WILD activities required the boys to be down on the
ground and I saw firsthand, since I worked at one of the stations, how hot,
sweaty, and dirty the boys became in 90 degree heat.
Uniforming is expensive especially when three out of four in my family is
uniformed. And it becomes more expensive when you have to replace lost and
damaged items. I certainly urge my scouts to wear their uniforms with pride
but at appropriate times.
When it came time for us to don our uniforms for the Saturday evening
campfire and the Sunday church service/awards, they were still nice and
neat. Many of us within our pack were slightly upset but the lack of
uniforms worn on Sunday. The Scout Oath does state: A Scout is Clean and A
Scout is Reverent. I feel it is more important to be in uniform for these
types of events than those that require one to get dirty. No points were
deducted on Sunday for those not in uniform.
