We have a favorite place to go that is also a favorite place for
skunks. I think you are correct, once a site has proven rewarding,
nothing will deter the critters. They will even enter the tents,
whether or not someone is in there already (though it is rumored
they will leave camp immediately upon hearing my snoring). One
of my Scouts had to resort to tying the tent zippers together with
his boot laces to keep the needle nosed striped kitties out.
Proper food handling is still required, but I have seen small
critters rip open food bags by dropping onto them from the branch
above. I would recommend a heavy duty coated nylon bag (! NOT a
sleeping back stuff sack! at least not one currently being used
as such).
