Songs and any other forms of teasing can certainly turn into
hazing if it isn't handled properly. If the object (person) of the
teasing is unwilling to be teased and the camp staff or whoever the
leadership is, proceeds with the teasing then it becomes hazing because
it is definitely unwanted attention. If the object of the teasing thinks
it is fun and likes the attention then they would probably not considered
themselves hazed.
We must be careful not to embarass the target.
I am a female on a Boy Scout camp staff and I take a lot of
goodnatured teasing from my staff. However, I always remind them to keep
the teasing to times when campers are not around because I can handle a
staff of 50 or so teasing me and I will dish it back. But when the
campers get ahold of it they don't know enough to quit and some of the
adults are no better than the boys. As a matter of fact some of the
campers come back year after year and revive the same old stuff. That's
when it can turn into hazing. So every year when we have our staff week
training I remind the staff to take care of each other and to help
prevent those situations from happening to each other and to campers.
