the meaning of scouting

We sing "little bar of soap" and the "frog song" to retreive
lost items. The staff is required to sing along and adults get
treated the same. The kids love it and I even had one kid lose
stuff on purpose just so he could sing the songs. I have heard
horror stories about hazing and the US Navy is one of the best
to become a "ShellBack" . FFA, HS football teams, college
frats, and even a new employee are hazed. Drinking 20 beers
in one hour and singing a song to get a lost hat back seem to be
a little different in the hazing book.
I wonder if having to sleep out side in a tiny little tent in a
sleeping bag will soon be considered as hazing. How far do we
go? Scouting has changed over the years. Some good and
some not so good changes have been made. When I was a
scout only 20 odd years ago, camping, cooking and such skills
were the norm. Now we have whole sections on drug abuse
and child protection. Maybe a chapter on hazing will replace
pioneering skills in the next hand book. B-P will probably roll
over in his grave when that happens. Oh well.........
