Our pack certainly needs at LEAST two Asst. Cubmasters for our size and
because the Cubmaster will be leaving when his son bridges to Boy
Scouts. Having all the Asst.'s up front seems too much. What are your
thoughts?
[Westfall, Carl] We have over 100 boys in our Pack and run very well with just
one Asst. Cubmaster (although we have from time to time had more). The
Cubmaster and Asst. take turns running things. The Cubmaster usually starts the
meeting off, then the Asst. gives important announcements of upcoming events.
Then the Cubmaster could award the new Bobcats. The Asst. Cubmaster could come
back when it was time to award something else or to introduce the skit. The
trading off back and forth keeps everybody involved and doesn't put all the
pressure on one person. Some activities are run by the two of them and can even
be kind of humorous. Our Cubmaster is usually the serious down to business type
and the Asst. is just an overgrown kid. It makes for a great combination to
keep alternating back and forth and then when they get together it's like Laurel
and Hardy.
One other thing - with a group that large, we have made it a point not to
present ALL awards at the Pack Meetings. We award all badges of rank (Bobcat,
Wolf, Bear, Webelo) at the Pack meeting and any special items (Religious
Emblems, AOL, PW Derby awards, World Conservation, etc.) at the Pack meeting.
All others (gold and silver arrow points, belt loops and pins, Webelo Activity
pins, etc.) are printed in our newsletter (which is handed out at the door) and
special presentations are performed at the Den Meeting.
