Hi Ken,
I'm dealing with similar problems. My Troop has grown to 70 boys in two
short years.
On the ASM front, identify a few adults in your troop that you feel have
or can be brought up to speed on this Scouting stuff and ask them
personally to take the position. It is best if you first write up a job
discription particullarly for an ASM as all discriptions of this position
in the BSA literature are vague. Define exactly what you want and expect
out of the position, write it down and then sit down with the people you
have identified one at a time and talk them into it.
On the JLT front, this is important for all of your boys in leadership or
soon to be in leadership. We identified that where we were weakest was
our Patrol leaders. The "canned" JLT program from BSA is good and
important but it deals with loftier concepts in leadership and does not
get to the nitty-gritty of what a Patrol leader needs to do to perform
his job. (really any boy leadership position for that matter). We have
instituted a seperate JLT, position specific that we hold once a month an
hour before Troop meeting. We are adapting and adding to the Scout Master
Fundamentals section on the patrol as our guide in this training. This is
a new atempt for us I will let you know how it works. Remember that the
primary function of the Scoutmaster and his/her staff is as guide and
trainer.
On your equipment and meeting space needs. I would go to your charter
organization for some help there. They may be able to help collectivly
and individually with these needs.
