Bob Losee offered excellent reasoning as to why the Scout is required to
draw his own map, and Jim Peterson presented some excellent methods for
doing so. Beyond giving the Scout some actual practice in using a map and a
compass, I would suggest that "what this requirement wants done" also
includes teaching the Scout that taking a hike should involve not only the
decision to go from "point a" to "point b", but that it should also include
some fairly detailed pre-hike planning of how he is actually going to
accomplish that objective.
