OK, I understand Bob Losee's reasoning on why to have Scouts draw map.
The question I have is, what does the requirement mean, "using a compass and
a map you've drawn, take a 5-mile hike?"
I don't think this means the Scout is supposed to copy another map. But in
order to make a map otherwise, he would have to do it while taking the 5-mile
hike, I'd think.
And then, if he hiked it once to make the map, what would be the point of
hiking it again, to follow the map (other than possibly to check his
distances and headings).
I've never really understood what this requirement wants done. I'm taking
suggestions.
