What I instruct my Troop Guide is to have the Scouts look at an
existing map, find the trail(s) they will be following, and draw
the route they will take. They must include the direction for
magnetic north, and they must include all trail junctions (with
names when available). They may also include other landmarks
that will help them to locate themselves on the map.
During the hike, we stop at all trail junctions (standard Troop
24 practice anyway), and one of the Scouts must identify our
location and the direction we will travel next.
The value here is not so much the map they have drawn but the
fact that they have had to study a map in advance and be able
to locate the features they will need for navigation in the
field.
