Where did everyone go?

Joel Geldin (jgeldin@IX.NETCOM.COM)

I sat down and got my email Sunday morning and my Scouts-L digest looked
like this...

Subject: SCOUTS-L Digest - 5 Sep 1997 to 6 Sep 1997
To: Recipients of SCOUTS-L digests <SCOUTS-L@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU>

There are 2 messages totalling 24 lines in this issue.

... did something break or was there just a collective sigh to gather new
thougts? I misseed my 50 messages and 1500 lines. I felt like I just ran
out of Scouting vitamins.

BTW, I've mostly lurked on Scouts-L (subscribing at the begining of the
summer), but I've made a few posts to the list. I read the list as a digest
which means I'm often left with a heartfelt "Amen" as I read many replies.

A couple of days ago, Michele Lockwood, from my "old Troop" 772 in Laguna
Niguel CA, wrote here that I was organizing a new Troop and Pack. I have
had great help in this task from Troop 772 who generously gave our new
Troop 754 a gift of Troopmaster Software (a possible comment on their fear
of my recordkeeping ability) and offered equipment loans for outings. A
part of this post is to publicly thank them for their Scout Spirit.

Other Scouters have helped me prepare for these new units including, my
district professionals and volunteers, Scouting friends, and The Camp
Director, Camp Staff, and Troop Leaders at Camp Cherry Valley, Catalina
Island CA, (who almost confiscated my laptop during thier last camp session
untill they saw I was organizing start-up programs and recruitment for
these new units).

All through this process I have distilled the collective wisdom of these
Scouters and the Scouters of Scouts-L into a (hopefully) coherent plan that
has motivated a new Chartered Organization, some new volunteer leadership,
and some pre-recruitment sign-ups. I'm heading into recruitment night in
two weeks with your advice and experiences for support.

Thank you all for your dedication to Scouting.

YIS,

Joel Geldin
