Re: 2nd Class Hiking Requirement

The way our troop guides complete this requirement is set up a simple
orienteering course during a weekend camping trip. We then give the scouts
the bearings and paces to each point, the scouts then lay this out making a
map. Then the scouts using a USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle map of the camp we
have them find some landmarks that they will see along the way and estimate
the amount of time it will take to complete each leg of the trip. Then each
patrol gets a USGS map and some markers to together come up with the
estimated places of the markers. They are then sent out to do the course.
The troop guides then follow each patrol as they go through the course to
make sure they don't cheat and skip landmarks. At the end the troop guide
leads a reflection to talk about what they did right, what they did wrong,
how they used leadership and ways to improve for next time.
